Thank you to all of my subscribers and viewers of the show. None of this would be possible, or worth all the work, without you. It’s been truly unbelievable how it took only a few months to arrive at a day I thought may never come. And now that it’s here, let’s keep it going! It’s all been incredibly exciting, we have some new shows coming, and I think we’re going somewhere great. I’m so glad to be doing this all, and the audience that I have amassed is just outstanding.
So thank you, everyone. Pulling of the show on top of school, and everyday life is a little difficult at times, but with my amazing friend and assistant Avi, and his commitment, we somehow are able to do it. TechKnowledgey couldn’t be the show that it is without you – and I think we can all agree, this whole thing is pretty awesome!
And yes, the next show is indeed airing tomorrow :)
Who liked my impression of “The Count” from Sesame Street? Either way, it is time once more to take a look into My Inbox! This is the segment here on TechKnowledgey where I answer some user submitted questions publicly for the benefit of all you TechKnowledgists. If you have any questions email them to me at mail@devirkahan.com – I respond to every email, but if you’re lucky, you may also see it on the next ‘My Inbox’ segment too! I try to answer questions I get frequently, or ones that I think all you TechKnowledgists will benefit from or enjoy, for everyone to see.
I would also like to formerly introduce my good friend Avi who has been helping me with TechKnowledgey since day one. So, welcome Avi, and thank you for reading the questions! This time they range from cameras, all the way to twitter!
On this episode of TechKnowledgey I talk about a problem everyone with laptops has: The Laptop Fever Problem. What I mean to say by that is laptops are just not meant to get too hot, the problem is that everyday use causes them to heat up. Every laptop has this problem, and this can significantly reduce the life of your notebook computer.
So what’s a TechKnowledgist to do? Well, you can go out and buy yourself a cooling pad, but I have anumber of problems with these. For one, they are bulky and expensive. Worst of all, they don’t go with you when your laptop is out of the house! When you need it most you don’t have any sort of cooling! I have searched a while for a solution, and I believe I have found it. Enter, Laptop Lifts, from http://laptoplifts.com/. This is what I truly believe to be, even more so than all those cooling pads, the solution to the Laptop Fever Problem is.
They are small rubber strips that you attach to the bottom of your laptop allowing airflow beneath it. This way the built in fans in your notebook can move the hot air away and circulate in new, cooler air. Plus, think about it – they add no bulk and are always with you. Unlike the cooling pads, they don’t just bandaid the problem by blowing cool air at the laptop, they fix the problem! They create circulation which is exactly what you want! Plus, they’re cheap at only about 10 bucks on Amazon.
I have been using Laptop Lifts now for a few days, and after a little bit of getting used to, I love them! They have significantly reduced the temperature of my laptop by close to 10 degrees! A big thank you to Chris Adams for sending me along a set to review and use in this episode of TechKnowledgey! He also sent along a second set for me to give away to one of you! Details on that in a future video, though…
In the meantime, what are you waiting for?! Go out and get yourself a pair! I’m telling you your laptop needs it and you won’t regret buying these!
I share my thoughts on the Apple iPad. Do I think it lived up to all the hype? Absolutely not. Do I think it’s a failure? Absolutely not as well. In fact, I think it’s quite a good product despite not living up to the hype. And that is just my point here – I think people need to get over the fact that it’s not what we expected, or truly wanted, and look at the product the way it is now.
No, Apple in my opinion for the first time did not at all live up to expectations, but how could they? These rumors have been going on now for 15 years! No company could ever live up to hype like that, and Apple is no exception. That being said though, I will admit to being a bit disappointed with this new iPad. It seems to me like just a big iPod Touch. I wanted something more, something revolutionary, and the iPad just was not it.
At that same time however, it still is going to be an amazing product. The immersive user interface and the experience that people will have using it is like no other. The iPad is the first tablet that was built from the ground up to be just that. It’s intuitive, user friendly, and elegant. You can’t say that about any other tablet device. Apple had a great mobile operating system that we all know from the iPhone, and they didn’t feel the need to change that. It was the first true touch enabled, mobile user interface ever, and they didn’t need to make a new one for the iPad. Anyone that knows how to use an iPhone or iPod Touch, which is pretty much everyone, will know how to use this.
Of course, they could have maybe polished the iPhone OS for the iPad a little more, and I hope they do, but for now it’s okay. Plus, imagine the possibilities of this! In just a few months the apps and things the iPad will be able to do will be absolutely breathtaking. Apple created something here like nothing else. The iPad, despite not being what exactly we were hoping for, is going to be the future of media.
I know I am a little late to the iPad thing, but I have been away on vacation until just yesterday. I had a great time, and now that I am back I wanted to record this video.
I would also like to apologize for having to split this into two parts. It’s only a minute or two over the maximum, but until I’m a YouTube partner, that’s the way it has to be. And to all of my viewers who don’t like the longer videos as much, I am sorry, but I really wanted to share all my thoughts and get everything in. This video had to be this long to do what I wanted it to do.
Being that Apple today announced their event to take place on the 27th, and being that this is a tech channel, I fell compelled to share my thoughts. I even give a few predictions if you like that kind of thing.
The only information we have now is the slogan for the event: “Come see our latest creation”, and of course the 500 year old rumor of a supposed tablet. Will we finally see the ling awaited Apple Tablet? Or will it be something totally new? What about a netbook? If it is a tablet, what will it be called? I hope not the iSlate like everyone is predicting. Whatever it is I’m sure it will revolutionize the tablet industry forever and create a new standard. You can say good-bye to all of the of the other tablets and eReaders because I have a good feeling that this is the one that’s going to win.
I also hope we see an update to the iPhone software or at least an announcement of an update. Apple also needs to fix up the Mac Pro because right now, there is no big reason for anyone to buy it with the fully loaded 27 inch iMac on the market for thousands of dollars less. Are we gonna see these updates too?
We’ll just have to hold our breath a few days longer to find out.
Just a few days before CES I made a blog post about a supposed new, larger, tablet-like eReader from Barnes & Nobles. Turns out, today it was announced by Plastic Logic, the manufacturer behind the Nook, and now the QUE as well. See? I was right! I posted about an actually true rumor! What do you know?!
Enough about that though, let’s get to the actual QUE. The QUE proReader is aimed, like I said at business professionals, taking on e-mail, calendar and other non-document tasks (including Outlook support). This is a very specific marketing technique, and I’m not sure how well it will work. It is more versatile than most eBook readers since it can also view & annotate PowerPoint, Word, Excel and PDF documents and it of course is using B & N’s book store and will most likely be available through them. There will be a 4GB model for $649, and an 8GB version packing AT&T 3G will be priced at $799.
Come on though, this thing is expensive! I like the fact that you can get it with or without the 3G network, but the market for this was small enough. They didn’t need to make it smaller by having it so insanely priced. Sure, it seems like a lot more than just a typical eBook reader, and it is. But with the supposed Apple Tablet coming out soon, it just won’t stand a chance. Even without that tablet it can’t go anywhere. There were a ton of other eReaders and tablet like devices announced today at CES, and while this is looking like one of the nicer and better ones, I just don’t think it can do much. The market for eReaders is growing now with more and more manufacturers.
The Kindle now is still in the lead, but for how long? Will the QUE beat it out even with the high price tag? Will the new, but now seemingly forgotten Nook win? Or what about all these other eReaders? What will happen with them? I’m not sure, but if and when this Apple Tablet ‘thing’ does come out, I think these questions will all be answered. There can be only one winner, only one eReader can dominate like there is only one music player that does (*ahem* iPod). The question is though, which one will that be?
There have been many, many other great gadgets and gizmos announced at CES 2010. There is just so much incredible technology being shown for these few days. It’s amazing, and I wish I was there to see it all first person. I plan on talking about more of all this great tech in another video after CES is over and the dust settles, so keep a look out for that!
CES is just an awesome time of year for us geeks and tech-enthusiasts. And even once CES is over, we still have this Apple event to look forward to (which should be amazing if it lives up to at all what everyone is hoping for) and then Macworld after that. Enjoy it while it lasts, everyone! I know I am…
As you probably know by now, Amazon has an E-Book reader called the Kindle. Shortly after the Kindle, they released a larger, more expensive version (aimed at students, or people who needed to read larger content) called the Kindle DX.
More recently Barnes & Nobles released their own E-Book reader called the Nook. I have used it and I must say it is very nice. It offers features the Kindle doesn’t, but until Barnes & Nobles works out the kinks in the software (which is rather sluggish as of now) the Kindle is still better.
Tonight though, I heard from a reliable inside source that B & N would be releasing a DX killer this year at CES on January 7th. Apparently, it will be called the ‘Q’ (Cue? Que?), will be 8 1/2 by 11 in size, and be aimed at businessmen (an interesting marketing strategy if you ask me). The truth is that the DX did not do very well, so as long as this ‘Q’ is not just a stretched out version of the Nook (like the DX was of the Kindle) it very well may beat the DX – not that that’s such a hard thing to do. This seems like a very interesting product from B & N and could really be something very nice. By any means though, you heard it here first: A DX killer coming from Barnes & Nobles this year at CES.
I don’t want to play into this rumor, but while it may beat the DX, will it even be able to face the evident Apple Tablet? According to many online sources Apple will be holding an even on January 26th to release something. Some people say this will be Steve Jobs’s last big product, so that means it will be BIG. I don’t know and only time will tell, but whatever the case, this all should be very interesting…
Yeah, my glasses are too reflective, but that’s not what’s important. It’s almost 2010! Happy New Year everyone! Can you believe it’s the end of 2009? It’s the end of a decade too! I just got used to writing ’09 on my papers!
I have been on the internet for years, but this past birthday of mine, September 23, 2009 I started my website. I started making YouTube videos, and producing content for the online world. I’ve come a long way in just a few months and plan on continuing to grow! These past few months of producing content have been fantastic and I look forward to another year, and another decade, just a great as this past one! I’ve got some great things and announcements coming, and 2010 is going to be great!
