Goodbye iPod Headphones!

// February 19th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Apple, Audio, Electronics, Entertainment, Gadgets, Hardware, Reviews, Tech, TechKnowledgey, iPhone

We all know that the headphones that come with any iPod are not the greatest in the world. In fact, they are far from it; They are uncomfortable, don’t have such great sound, and are not such a high quality build. On this episode of TechKnowledgey I talk a little bit about new headphones, and their iPod counterpart.

I used to use them everyday on my hour long ride in to school, but they really hurt my ears! They were immensely uncomfortable to use for along period of time. I was fed up with the pain of using these headphones every day on my ride to school so I went out and bought myself a pair of Marshmallow headphones from JVC.

I really like them, and I am glad I made the purchase. They have great audio, and songs and podcasts sound much better than they did with the iPod headphones. The best part is though, that they are incredibly comfortable! The memory foam earbuds fit perfectly in any ear, and I would have no problem wearing them all day, to be quite honest. They really don’t bother me at all, which is a first for me and headphones. Plus, they are only about 15 bucks!

The only downside to them is the fact that they do not have an in-line remote and mic like the iPod headphones did, but that is a sacrifice I would easily make for all the benefits of these great headphones. If you’re in the market for a new pair of headphones, or want to upgrade your current iPod headphones, I highly recommend these as an excellent option.

Leaving (On A Jet Plane) For Vacation!

// January 20th, 2010 // No Comments » // Blog, Electronics, Fun, Gadgets, Life, Photos, School, Tech, Vacation, Video

That’s right! I’m finally done with school and I’m heading to Florida for winter break! I’ll be visiting my cousins and getting some much needed relaxation. It’s so good to finally be done with midterms. And tests. And teachers. And homework. It’s just great to finally have some time away from everything (at least until next semester).

Of course, time away means time away. I’m not going to be online more than about once a day in Florida. Shocking, right? I’ll still be checking comments and responding to emails, but I like the idea of taking a break from my online life as well. I enjoy knowing that I’ll be able to go back to all the great tech when I get back. To me, that is part of vacation!

Of course, my cousins are a bigger part! They moved to Florida a while back, and I don’t get to see them much more than a few weeks a year. They are all so cute (except for my Aunt and Uncle – I don’t think that the right word for them would be “cute”, they’re just awesome), and I truly enjoy spending time with them.

Since this is a tech blog, here are some tips for traveling with tech:

  1. Bring you chargers. For everything. There would be nothing worse than your camera dying and you realizing the charger is couple thousand miles away.
  2. Bring an SD card reader. I talk about that more here, but you should have something to get all that media off of your devices while your’e away. This way, you can never run out of space for pictures (and movies).
  3. Be aware! You are not at your house, and so people will steal things if they can. Don’t loose your precious and expensive gadgets. If you are in a hotel, just be careful with them. The same goes for all you people who are not staying in a hotel as well.

Well, I hope you enjoy your vacation, whenever it is! Mine is now and I know I’ll be enjoying it. Anticipation is one of the best parts of vacation, and I’m enjoying it already! There won’t be many videos in the coming week in a half, so whatever content I do put up, which includes photos and write-ups, will be right here on my blog. Check back soon and have a good one!

The Answer To The Yankee Doodle Problem

// January 17th, 2010 // No Comments » // Comic, Community, Entertainment, Fun

I posed the question yesterday: What exactly did Yankee Doodle refer to when he called something “macaroni”? Well, you guys came up with some great answers and I thought (like I said) I would share a few of them with you in this video.

Here were just a few from various YouTubers (unedited, by the way – they appear as they were posted):

  1. “The Macaroni Club consisted of young, wealthy British gentlemen who traveled
    to France and Italy and adopted the ostentatious and flamboyant fashions
    popular in those countries during the eighteenth century. The Macaronis, not members of a true club but rather a new generation of continental society, were often ridiculed by the British establishment.
    The joke was that a colonial—a Yankee “dandy”—would stick a feather in his tricorne or coonskin cap and think himself as fashionable as any man à la mode in Paris or Rome.”
  2. “I always thought it was this:
    Yankee Doodle went to town, riding on a pony, stuck a feather in HIS hat and called it macaroni”
  3. it’s a type of fashion.
    see Macaroni_(fashion) in wikipedia :) ”The song Yankee Doodle, from the time of the American Revolutionary War, mentions a man who “stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni,” the joke being that the Yankees were naive enough to believe that a feather in the hat was a sufficient mark of a macaroni. Whether or not these were alternative lyrics sung in the British army, they were enthusiastically taken up by the Yankees themselves.”

Well thanks to everyone for helping me answer up this ridiculously weird question! If you got any others, send them to me at mail@devirkahan.com.

What Did Yankee Doodle Call Macaroni?

// January 16th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Comic, Community, Entertainment, Fun, Life

I heard a question that has now been bothering me for while and so I though I would share it with you to see what you think the answer is. Everyone knows the famous line “Yankee Doodle went to town riding on a pony, stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni”, right? The question is though, what did Yankee Doodle call macaroni? What is the word “It” in this famous song referring to? Everyone had heard it, and everyone knows about it. No one though, can ever be positive what exactly Yankee Doodle was calling macaroni?

Was it the feather? Was it the hat? Why would he call those things macaroni? Was he calling the town macaroni? What if the towns actual name was “Town”?

I’ve already heard two crazy answers from friends I have already asked:

  1. Yankee Doodle was on drugs and that is why he called the feather macaroni. That explains a lot…
  2. Yankee Doodle was actually wadding through a town filled knee-high in macaroni. That was what he was calling macaroni and was referring to by the word “It”. We just were not made aware of this macaroni in the original song.

I guess we will never truly know, but we can share our thoughts! Leave your comments on the YouTube video, or below. I’ll make a follow up video with my favorite answers. Please help me though! I can’t loose any more sleep over this! You can also email me other questions on famous lines that make no sense to mail@devirkahan.com and maybe we’ll make a series out of these videos!

(Credit for this question goes to two cool adult-friends of mine. Thanks guys!)
